Default Enable Intel P4 hyperthreading, on an Intell i865PE chipset, on windows 7
Hi all,

The past few weeks i have been searching for a driver that will enable hyperthreading on my PC.

I'm on a dell dimension 4600 with an Intel Pentium 4 Northwood (2,4) GHz CPU and the motherboard has an Intel i865PE chipset.

When I bought this machine, it was running Windows XP and Hyperthreading was working like a charm. Last month I decided to upgrade to Windows 7. Ever since ive been unable to get Hyperhreading working again.

Unfortunatly Dell doesn't support Windows 7 on this type of PC, so they offer no matching drivers. I also checked the Intel website for drivers, but no luck there.

Ive already tried to install some older drivers that are officially meant for use with Windows XP, but also no luck there.

I fear that it's simply to big a wish to get Hyperthreading working under Windows 7. Still, i hope someone around here will be able to help me out.

Thanks in advance!

GJ

From what I've researched, it seems that hyper threading was designed to work with XP. Windows 7 supports hyper threading and should be turned on in the BIOS but I'm assuming you've already done that. Not sure why it's not working with your Dell but it could be a problem trying to get it going again. All the best...

Yes, I already checked the settings in my bios. But I can´t find anything there that has to do with hyperthreading.

I think the reason that it isn´t working is beacause the wrong driver is installed. I believe I need a driver that is compatible with my hard- and software.

Anybody else having an idea?

I found this but I don't know if it works. Some guy used this method with Windows 7 Pro.

Quote:
1 enable hyperthreading in B.I.O.S.
2 load up windows and CREATE A RESTORE POINT!
3 open task manager and click the PERFORMANCE tab, just to make sure it ISN'T working, if it is.... GREAT, but i doubt if it was that easy, that you would be reading this lol
4 click start, then RIGHT-CLICK the COMPUTER then click on MANAGE
5 click DEVICE MANAGER, then double click PROCESSOR
6 right click ANY of the listed processors
7 click UNINSTALL
8 it will say "warning you are about to uninstall this device from your system" click ok
9 click reboot now
10 repeat step 3... you should see all threads
This worked for someone else but not necessarily on a Dell.

I tried removing the processor from the hardware list, but no luck there. I think this is because Win7 uses the same driver for the "new" hardware it finds.

Just to be sure that im not mistaken, does the Intel Pentium 4, 2.4 GHz, type northwood exctually use Hyper-threading? This may sound weird, but I can't find any documentation on the web that says it does.

This is more specified info about my CPU:

CPU Properties:
CPU Type Intel Pentium 4A, 2400 MHz (4.5 x 533)
CPU Alias Northwood, A80532
CPU Stepping C1
Original Clock 2400 MHz
L1 Trace Cache 12K Instructions
L1 Data Cache 8 KB
L2 Cache 512 KB (On-Die, ATC, Full-Speed)

CPU Physical Info:
Package Type 478 Pin uPGA
Package Size 3.50 cm x 3.50 cm
Transistors 55 million
Process Technology 6M, 0.13 um, CMOS, Cu, Low-K
Die Size 131 mm2
Core Voltage 1.475 - 1.55 V
I/O Voltage 1.475 - 1.55 V
Typical Power 38.7 - 82 W (depending on clock speed)
Maximum Power 49 - 103 W (depending on clock speed)

I thought that hyperthreading was only available from the 3.06Ghz processor. According to Wikipedia this is correct.

There is a Pentium 4 2,4 GHz that uses Hyper-threading. This is the Northwood series. Since may 2003 every Pentium 4 CPU uses Hyper-Threading, according to this wiki:

List of Intel Pentium 4 microprocessors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

However since my CPU uses C1 stepping it cannot be a model that uses Hyper-threading since all Northwood type CPU´s with Hyper-threading use D1 stepping. (see wiki above)

So I´m sorry for wasting your time. I must have been mistaken about the Hyper-Threading.

But anyway thanks for trying to help me out!
